Welcome to Stephen Nusko's Election Page

I am Stephen Nusko and recently filed my papers to run for councillor in Ward 4 for the town of South Bruce Peninsula.

I am 18 years of age having lived in the area for the last 3 years. I have many roots here as my mother is part of the extended Kyte family in Wiarton, and grew up in this area.

We moved back 3 years ago to take over Lloyd's Smoke Shop and Pool Hall on the main street where I work part time. Since moving to Wiarton, I have been busy in the community including playing at many of the local churches for their Sunday services. I have been active with many other area organizations including helping at the Rotary Village fair, rowing club, and a member of the Bruce Peninsula Sportsman's Association. I currently work at both Lloyd's and the Wiarton Video Store part time. All of this allows me to stay attuned to the needs of the business and public community.

  2. Hello Stephen.
Are you aware of the County's plan to divert half the traffic from Wiarton coming from Tobermory - or going to Tobermory, by constructing the "West Road" which would run parallel to Hwy #6 along the west shore? People now heading north mostly turn through Hepworth. This new road through Oliphant and Red Bay would potentially cut the traffic in HALF. Less traffic...less business for Wiarton. Sauble stands to benefit greatly, at the expense of Wiarton and the residents of Red Bay and Howdenvale. Art King supports this travesty, as does Gwen and Close. We need to stop this now, and the current council has been using the avoidance technique. Where do you stand on this?

  3. @GH on the “West Road” issue

This is a complex issue, and I’m sorry for the gap in responding I was doing research and finally found http://www.brucecounty.on.ca/download_notice.php?file_id=3027. The county’s desire is to have an “upper teir” road as an alternative in addition to hwy #6 in winters when it is unavailable due to weather. From my observations at our business, most people during summer seem to go up to their cottage and come back later to shop. Of course, some people going through town do stop, and as a business owner, I’m looking for increases in customers not decreases which means this needs to be weighed carefully. Their plan, as stated, makes sense, and my understanding is that it would be similar to Bruce Road 9. The view of my constituents is important to making this decision as it affects them. I would say further exploration of the issue in pubic conversations and looking at the viable options, and ramifications are required. I look forward to hearing more from you about this subject.
